Requirements For All Positions

Seasonal positions are part-time, and schedules will vary weekly for most positions.

  • Availability: Applicants must be available to work during our normal zoo season (April through October) including weekdays, weekends, holidays unless stated otherwise. Evening shifts may also be available to work during our Festival of Illumination event, open September – January.

Overview

Team Members in this position may work in a variety of locations in the zoo including the entrance, attractions, and  retail locations. Employees in in this position provide our guests with excellent customer service and help ensure that all guests have a positive experience.

Responsibilities include assisting visitors with entry into the zoo, providing information about zoo rules and other information, handling cash, operating POS terminal, keeping work area clean and organized, stocking and displaying merchandise, and answering visitor questions.

Overview

Food & Beverage Team Members work in various venues in Southwick’s Zoo and Galliford’s Restaurant & Tavern. These team members will be assigned duties as volume of customers dictates on a daily basis.

Availability/Time Commitment: Weekend, holiday, and vacation availability is a priority for this position.

Petting zoo attendants assist with the cleaning of our petting zoo area and with the feeding of our petting zoo animals. Petting Zoo attendants also interact with and educate our visitors. Petting zoo attendants may also work in our Deer Forest to assist visitors and ensure a safe environment for guests and the animals.

Overview

Pony Ride Attendants assist with the zoo’s pony ride attraction. Attendants are responsible for lifting children onto the saddle, explaining and enforcing ride rules, and keeping the pony ride area clean. Attendants are expected to help maintain a safe environment for both the visitors and the animals.

Pony ride attendants may also work in our Deer Forest to assist visitors and ensure a safe environment for guests and the animals.

Summary

This full-time or part-time position performs basic animal husbandry for a wide variety of animals with a strong emphasis on cleaning animal exhibits. The position reports to the Lead Hoof Stock Zookeeper and President of the Zoo.

Duties

  • Cleaning and feeding of Hoof Stock animal collection/other husbandry tasks.
  • Maintenance/upkeep/construction/landscaping of animal exhibits
  • Basic animal training; shifting animals from one area to another.
  • Driving company vehicles such as trucks, tractors, and gators.
  • Operation of hand tools such as chainsaws, drills, and mowers
  • Communicate with Lead Hoof Stock Zookeeper and Zoo Vet regarding animal’s welfare and health observations, and assist with procedures as well as administer medicine as needed
  • Restocking supplies and inventory
  • Provide assistance with live animal interactions and showings (seasonal) and informally educate visitors between presentations as well as provide guidance for job shadowing
  • Providing Enrichment for animals, including but not limited to: cutting brows, adding scents in habitats, giving rawhide for carnivores
  • Provide Customer Service as needed; crowd control, first aid, search for missing children, giving directions, changing tires and jump-starting customer cars, unloading hay, grain, and shavings, animal capture and help other zoo departments.
  • Must attend manager/zoo wide meetings and complete all training required by Southwick’s Zoo

Requirements

  • Must be 18 years old or older.
  • Must have a High School/GED, preferred BS/BA Degree with 2-4 years of prior animal care experience, preferred to have 2 years of zookeeping
  • Must have intermediate language skills to be able to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedural manuals.
  • Must have basic math skills to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Must have intermediate reasoning abilities to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
  • Must be able to receive emails and research on the internet.
  • Must have valid driver’s license to drive company vehicles on the property.
  • Must be able to operate farm equipment and be able to use power tools
  • Must have basic knowledge of zoo animals life history and range.

    Overview

    The parking supervisor will oversee parking lot attendants and all parking areas with an emphasis on safety, communication, and efficiency. This position is a seasonal position/

    Parking supervisor will also be required to take shifts as a parking attendant in a supervisory role. They will assist guests with parking their vehicles in a safe and organized manner. Job responsibilities include assisting with scheduling, schedule changes, shift coverage, staff management, time management, parking lot set-up, parking lot maintenance and supply management, directing vehicles (including school buses) to park in the appropriate areas, directing traffic as guests cross the street, maintaining a safe environment for both drivers and pedestrians, keeping parking lots clean and free of litter, and assisting in other areas of the zoo as needed. Salary based on experience.

    Requirements

    • Must be at least 18 years of age with a drivers license for at least 2 years.
    • Weekend and night availability is a priority.
    • Must have experience in the parking industry.
    • Must be safety conscious and have a strong attention to detail and problem-solving skills.
    • Must have a positive and upbeat demeanor.
    • Must have strong customer service and communication skills.

    Employees in this position operate our Soaring Eagle Zip Line ride. Zip Line operators are responsible for ensuring the safety of our visitors while providing a fun and exciting experience. Zip Line Operators handle ride payments, assist guests with boarding the ride, ensure that they are safely restrained, operate the ride, and explain and enforce all ride safety rules and regulations.

    Requirements

    • Applicants must be at least 18 years of age.
    • Per MA law, must submit and pass a CORI check.
    • Must be safety conscious and have strong attention to detail.
    • Must be friendly and comfortable interacting with zoo visitors of all ages.
    • Must have a minimum of 2 years mechanical experience.
    • Prior ride operation experience is preferred, but we are willing to train.
    • This position requires regularly standing and walking. Applicants must be able to use hands, reach with hands and arms, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl occasionally, and be able to lift or move up to 60 pounds.

    Employees in this position drive our Woodland Express Train which is a rubber tire train driven through our North American habitat. Train ride operators are responsible for providing guests with a fun and enjoyable experience while maintaining a safe environment for guests and animals. Responsibilities include driving the train in a safe manner, assisting passengers with boarding and exiting the train, providing information about the zoo and answering visitor questions, and notifying maintenance of any potential mechanical issues.

    Requirements

    • Per MA law, must submit and pass a CORI check.
    • A valid drivers license is required.
    • Must have prior experience driving trailors and operating machinery.
    • Experience with air brakes, tractors, and truck driving is preferred.

    • Must be friendly and comfortable interacting with zoo visitors of all ages.

    Overview

    Southwick’s Zoo’s Safety and Security Department is looking to expand their team! Safety and Security Officers aids the public in emergency and nonemergency situations, helps to protect the zoo property, and enforce Southwick’s Zoo safety policies and procedures. We are seeking individuals capable of monitoring, analyzing, and identifying situations and determining the best approach to resolve the situations they encounter. Ideal candidates will have excellent customer service skills, impressive ability to communicate well with other, and ability to think critically in any situation. Duties include:

    • Perform security patrols of designated areas by foot or vehicle
    • Observe for any conditions that may create security concerns or safety hazards
    • Respond to emergency situations and/or alarms and contact appropriate emergency services based up situation
    • Monitor for the presence of unauthorized persons
    • Maintain access control of premises and monitors entrances and exits
    • Investigate and prepare reports on accidents, incidents, and suspicious activities
    • Provide high level of customer service and assistance to employees and courteous and professional manner

    Availability:

    Applicants would be working primarily weekends with some holidays and nights

    Qualifications:

    • High School diploma or GED equivalent
    • Must be at least 18 years of age.
    • 1 (One) year previous Security experience highly preferred
    • Must possess a state issued Driver’s License and Healthcare Provider CPR Card
    • Must be able to pass drug screen
    • Must be able to successfully pass a CORI background check that includes personal references, criminal history, employment, and education verification, DMV check and credit check if applicable.
    • Must have access to reliable transportation

    Overview

    The Safety and Security Supervisor will help organize and oversee all security operations for zoo activities and special events. Safety and Security personnel will be under their direction while they develop and implement policies and procedures to maintain safety and security standards.

    The Safety and Security Supervisor will demonstrate excellent surveillance and emergency response skills. They will need a strong commitment to security rules and knowledge of hazards and threats to safety. The Safety and Security Supervisor will have a number of people under their responsibility, so they must also exhibit strong leadership skills.

    The Safety and Security Supervisor will:

    • Assist in the development and help implement safety and security policies, protocols, and procedures
    • Assist in recruitment, training, and supervision of safety and security personnel
    • Attend meetings with management to determine operational needs

    • Teaching children about the animals at the zoo covering a variety of topics including adaptations, behavior, and habitats
    • Being hands-on with certain animals and guiding close interactions with certain animal ambassadors
    • Developing lessons and activities to engage and educate kids
    • Supervising children throughout the day in instructional, play, and creative sessions and by walking around the zoo with them each day

    Requirements

    • Must be a certified teacher currently working in education (elementary or middle school preferred)
    • Must have a general knowledge of animals, biology, and ecosystems

    • Must have excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

    • The ability to be physically active throughout the day.

    Overview

    Calling all College Students! We are seeking some Marketing Interns to join our Marketing Team for the Summer and Fall.

    We are looking for enthusiastic students with a creative passion for marketing and customer service to join our marketing team! This paid internship program will give you a chance to gain an in-depth knowledge of what it is like to be part of our ever-changing, fast-paced world as marketers. Our summer and fall internship program will be located at Southwick’s Zoo in Mendon, MA.  Our interns have the unique opportunity to gain real work experience, while participating in interactive social activities throughout the duration of the internship assignment.

    Summary

    This full-time position oversees daily activities of education staff members, as well as coordinates and develops educational department activities, programs (both on-site and off-site), projects, and memberships. The Director of Education supervises the Education Department, which includes 2 subordinate supervisors, 3 full time employees, and 7-8 interns each year. This position reports to the Executive Director or Education, Conservation, and Research and the President of the Zoo.

    Duties

    • Oversee daily activities of education staff, also assisting with answering emails, phone messages, inquiries, etc. for the Executive Director as needed
    • Coordinate the education department’s activities, programs, all ZooMobiles, projects, and memberships
    • Develop new educational programs as needed, and successfully market all education programs
    • Represent the Zoo in educational settings including seminars, local gatherings, chamber events, and other planned activities
    • Represent the zoo in media appearances, including print articles, tv and radio spots, and social media posts
    • Have a current knowledge of major issues and trends regarding education, both nationally and locally
    • Analyzes animal information programs and curriculum materials for appropriateness and quality.
    • Interact with the academic and general community, staying aware of needs, trends, and current issues affecting education
    • Perform live animal presentations, both at the zoo and for outreach programs such as ZooMobiles
    • Perform general animal husbandry and zookeeping tasks
    • Order enrichment and animal care supplies for ambassador animals, and ensure budgets are maintained while at times assisting with supply orders for all animal care departments
    • Assist with conservation initiatives and goals, along with assisting with animal acquisitions and associated paperwork
    • Work closely with the non-profit, Earth Limited, to ensure continued success and understanding of all research, education, and conservation programming
    • Implement long-term goals for the education department
    • Answer animal-related questions from visitors, students, and the community
    • Provide interactive, educational elements and graphics throughout the park that guests are eager to use
    • Oversee, coordinate, and develop internship and job shadowing programs.
    • Must attend manager/zoo wide meetings and complete all training required by Southwick’s Zoo

    Requirements

    • Must have a Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Arts Degree (prefer Master’s Degree) and 2-4 years of prior animal care experience, preference to have 2 years of zookeeping
    • Must have very high language skills to be able to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents with the ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community. Must have the ability to write speeches and articles for publication that conform to prescribed style and format. Must have the ability to effectively present information to top management, public groups, and/or boards of directors.
    • Must have intermediate math skills with the ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Must have the ability to apply concepts to basic algebra and geometry.
    • Must have high reasoning abilities to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Must have the ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
    • Must have valid driver’s license to drive company vehicles.
    • Must have knowledge of Microsoft Office Applications, as well as Twin Oaks (or similar CRM software) used for memberships. Adobe photoshop experience would be helpful but not required.
    • Must be a strong planner, have great organizational skills, excellent time management, and the ability to multi-task and work in a fast-paced environment.
    • Must be able to regularly stand, walk, sit, use hands, reach with hands and arms, talk/hear and frequently climb or balance, and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl.
    • Must be able to lift and/or move occasionally up to 50 pounds.
    • Must be able to frequently work in outdoor weather conditions, and occasionally work in wet or humid conditions.

      Summary

      This full-time or part-time position performs basic animal husbandry for a wide variety of animals with a strong emphasis on cleaning animal exhibits. The position reports to the Lead Hoof Stock Zookeeper and President of the Zoo.

      Duties

      • Cleaning and feeding of Hoof Stock animal collection/other husbandry tasks.
      • Maintenance/upkeep/construction/landscaping of animal exhibits
      • Basic animal training; shifting animals from one area to another.
      • Driving company vehicles such as trucks, tractors, and gators.
      • Operation of hand tools such as chainsaws, drills, and mowers
      • Communicate with Lead Hoof Stock Zookeeper and Zoo Vet regarding animal’s welfare and health observations, and assist with procedures as well as administer medicine as needed
      • Restocking supplies and inventory
      • Provide assistance with live animal interactions and showings (seasonal) and informally educate visitors between presentations as well as provide guidance for job shadowing
      • Providing Enrichment for animals, including but not limited to: cutting brows, adding scents in habitats, giving rawhide for carnivores
      • Provide Customer Service as needed; crowd control, first aid, search for missing children, giving directions, changing tires and jump-starting customer cars, unloading hay, grain, and shavings, animal capture and help other zoo departments.
      • Must attend manager/zoo wide meetings and complete all training required by Southwick’s Zoo

      Requirements

      • Must be 18 years old or older.
      • Must have a High School/GED, preferred BS/BA Degree with 2-4 years of prior animal care experience, preferred to have 2 years of zookeeping
      • Must have intermediate language skills to be able to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedural manuals.
      • Must have basic math skills to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
      • Must have intermediate reasoning abilities to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
      • Must be able to receive emails and research on the internet.
      • Must have valid driver’s license to drive company vehicles on the property.
      • Must be able to operate farm equipment and be able to use power tools
      • Must have basic knowledge of zoo animals life history and range.
      • Must be able to regularly stand, walk, sit, use hands, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl, talk/hear and occasionally taste/smell.
      • Must be able to lift and/or move up to 100 pounds on a regular basis.

      Overview

      Part-time Animal Ambassador Keeper

      Southwick’s Zoo is currently accepting applications for a part-time Animal Ambassador Keeper. This position assists the Zookeeper/Educators in the EARTH Discovery Center and reports to the Co-Lead Ambassador & Reptile Zookeepers and the Executive Director of EARTH Limited. The primary function of this position is to assist in the daily care and husbandry of EARTH’s animal ambassador collection, which consists of invertebrates, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals. This position will also assist in conducting education programming on-site and off-site using live animals and artifacts. As EARTH staff you will perform membership transactions and administrative tasks in the EARTH Discovery Center, as needed.

      Work schedule will include four days a week and approximately 8 hours per day. Hours may vary during the off season (November-May)

      Essential Functions

      • Assist in daily care and husbandry of EARTH’s animal ambassador collection.
      • Assist with and implement positive reinforcement training for husbandry behaviors and show behaviors.
      • Assist in the creation and implementation of enrichment for animals.
      • Assist in the transport of animals throughout the zoo.
      • Assist in daily up-keep of the EARTH Discovery Center and Reptile Building.
      • Assist in managing and supervising interns.
      • Conduct education programming, including on-site formal and informal live animal presentations; Junior Zookeeping; demonstrations for our Wild Adventures Summer Program; on-site virtual and off-site in-person ZooMobile presentations; and other off-site events such as career fairs, class lectures, etc.
      • Interact and interpret with visitors in a positive manner in a variety of situations.
      • Participate in, and support, after-hour events, fundraisers, and other EARTH Ltd. sponsored events.
      • Perform membership transactions and administrative tasks in the EARTH Discovery Center as needed.
      • Performs other duties as assigned.

      Experience Required

      • College degree in biological sciences, zoology, or related field required.
      • Previous experience caring for animals.
      • Previous public speaking and/or teaching experience highly preferred.
      • Must have excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
      • Must be comfortable working with children of all ages, as well as adults.
      • Must work well independently, but also as a team player.
      • Must be comfortable working in a fast-paced environment.
      • Must be able to stand for long periods of time, work inside and outdoors in any weather, and be able to lift and carry up to 35 pounds.
